NEVADA, Iowa (WHO) – Nine months after killing a former golfer of Iowa State University at death on a golf course in Ames, Collin Richards acknowledged his guilt in court on Friday.
Richards pleaded guilty to the first degree murder of Celia Barquin Arozamena. The former ISU golfer was attacked on September 17, 2018 at Coldwater Golf Links. His body was found on the course by other golfers.
Collin Richards, a 22-year-old homeless man who lived near the course, was arrested nearby.
Earlier this year, Richards sent the judge a handwritten note asking him to change his plea of guilty. The judge did not accept this request but urged Richards to meet his lawyers. Today, at a hearing in Nevada, Richards has officially pleaded guilty. He will be badly convicted on August 23rd. He is liable to life imprisonment with the possibility of conditional release.
County Attorney Jessica Reynolds issued a statement following today's hearing:
"I am very much in love with Celia's family today with the hope that this result will bring them some comfort … I hope that we will be able to take advantage of this moment to gather in community." and begin to heal together. "
Barquin Arozamena won a Big 12 Title at ISU. Iowa State has renamed its award of female athlete of the year in her honor.
