This Friday marked the 164th anniversary of the physical departure of José María Vargas, a renowned Venezuelan doctor, writer and politician.

The doctor born March 10, 1786 in the state of Vargas, finished his medical studies in Caracas and then practiced in Cumaná. His stay in Britain served as a bridge to expand his studies in this field.

Vargas was the first civilian to hold the presidency of the Republic in 1835, since he was detained until 1836, when he resigned. Later, he was a government advisor and director of public education.

Years later, in August 1853, he fell ill and traveled to the United States. He died a year later in New York; his ashes were buried in the National Pantheon in Caracas in 1877.
