(CNN) – The creator of the famous cartoon Sponge Bob, Stephen Hillenburg, died Tuesday at age 57, confirmed Nickelodeon, who aired the show.

Hillenburg revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease of ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

According to his IMDB profile, Hillenburg was 57 years old.

At that time, he told Variety that he planned to work on his show "as long as he can."

SpongeBob has been on Nickelodeon since 1999.

The series, made on an anthropomorphic marine sponge called Bob and his many friends living underwater, is broadcast in more than 200 countries and translated into more than 50 languages. He has won numerous awards during his career, including four Emmys.

Hillenburg won a special Emmy Award earlier this year for his work in the field of animation.
