This was reported by the Colombian Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and the Environment (Ideam), which detailed in a newsletter that the measure had been taken under threat of flooding following the heavy rains that hit the country in recent days. .
The entity said that "the moderate rise in the level of the Magdalena River at the height of Barrancabermeja suggests this level of warning given the fact that levels will continue to increase between Barrancabermeja and Puerto Wilches" .
In addition, the increase in river flow was introduced by the "rising wave transit" to Puerto Berrío, municipality of Antioquia department (north-west).
According to Ideam data, Barrancabermeja stands on the border between the yellow alert and the red alert, the water level being close to 4.5 meters.
For its part, the hydrological station of Puerto Wilches today recorded a level of 5.94 meters, close to the maximum level reached in this part of the river, 6.20 meters.
If the increase in this area reaches 6.5 meters, the authorities must declare the yellow alert, while the orange will be issued at 7 meters and the red at 7.5 meters.
Another population in an emergency situation in Santander is Sabana de Torres, where the red alert is maintained in case of "sudden probability of increase in the Lebrija river basin".
According to Ideam, 156 risk alerts are registered in the country, mostly due to the winter season, of which 75 are red, 61 orange and 20 yellow.
Heavy rains in the country caused a landslide on Sunday morning in Rosas, municipality of Cauca Department (south-west), killing 30 people after eight houses were buried while their inhabitants were sleeping.
