Before the Congress of the Republic, the representative in the Chamber of the Department of Vichada Gustavo Londoño García has introduced a bill to give value to the maternal name.
The initiative aims to change the order of family names of newborns by giving them option for parents to decide which surname they want to start.

The representative of Londoño explained that the project "stems from the need to recognize motherhood as a huge effort What do women do when they reproduce life and their essential role in the education, care and development of their children?
Among the proposed changes by the initiative, it should be noted that if the parents fail to reach an agreement or if no statement is made before the birth registration, they would put as surnames the first of the mother followed by the first of the father, in opposition to what is currently established in the law.
The project also stresses that it is possible to register children with only one family name, this considering the minorities that exist in Colombia and who usually designate a single family name for their children.
This change also benefit single mothers with unrecognized children who wish to register their children only with a last name.

It should be recalled that this proposal has already been made several times to the Congress of the Republic. In 2013, party senators U Roy Barreras and Armando Benedetti They presented the project, which was discussed in plenary.
Similarly, in 2004, Carlos Moreno, then Senator of the Conservative Party, presented the project approved by the first Senate committee during the first debate. Both proposals failed to overcome all the discussions.
In order for the current initiative to become law, four debates must be held in the Congress of the Republic.
