The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office today called for the pre-trial detention of former state leader Rafael Correa, who was linked in a case of kidnapping in Colombia. a former Ecuadorian legislator in 2012.
The request was made by Paúl Pérez, Acting Attorney General, at a hearing devoted to the examination of the precautionary measures applied to Correa in l & # 39; Fernando Balda case at the National Court of Justice (CNJ) in Quito.
Balda's defense, present at this location, supported the claim and Judge Daniela Camacho will decide whether or not he accepts the prosecutor's request.
Correa, who has been living in Belgium for a year, had to surrender Monday to the CNJ in Quito, but of his own free will he appeared at the Consulate of Ecuador in Belgium, as alleged compliance with the measure of precaution that was imposed after his criminal connection with the case on June 18.
According to the judicial decision that day, the exmandatario was to report to the CNJ every two weeks starting on July 2, a precautionary measure which, in the opinion of the Fiscalía, was ignored and therefore corresponds to the imposition of preventive prison
The prosecutor asked Interpol to be informed of the arrest of the former president by issuing a red alert for his capture and extradition.
For his part, Correa's lawyer, Caupolicán Ochoa, asked the judge to reject the arrest request and accept a replacement of precautionary measures so that Correa could appear at the Consulate in Belgium.
Ochoa also argued that it was also the initial position of the Office of the Prosecutor and that it was the judge who had decided to seek his appearance in Quito.
The former president, who ruled Ecuador between 2007 and 2017, had previously appeared by videoconference from the Belgian Consulate during a voluntary hearing in the investigation phase of the # 39; s case.
According to Balda, the attempted kidnapping took place in Colombia on the night of August 13, 2012, when five people, four men and a woman, approached and violently placed him in a vehicle and kept him in detention. for about an hour and a half, after which he was saved.
Correa rejects any involvement in ensuring that there is no evidence of his alleged personal involvement in the facts and the complaint that is subject to political and media persecution.
The hearing was briefly suspended and must be reinstated this afternoon.
