Ravenous wildfires continued to ravage coastal tourist areas near the Greek capital on Tuesday, causing at least 74 deaths and burning houses, cars and forests, officials said. The number of deaths has increased after the discovery of 26 people, it is believed that members of the same family, some of them have kissed.
Others threw themselves into the sea to escape the flames and some did not return. It supports fires every year, but those that exploded on Monday are the deadliest in recent decades. Fueled by strong winds, they have trapped thousands of people on beaches, roads and homes.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras declared three days of mourning. The authorities feared that the death toll would increase because there was no definitive count of the missing.
Coast guard vessels patrolled the coast near the fires after more than 700 people blocked by the rapid spread of flames had to be rescued from beaches or the sea, where six of the dead appeared
. Authorities urged people to contact them if they were looking for loved ones, many people resorted to social networks with pictures of people. They searched and the last place where they were seen.
Fire spokeswoman Stavroula Malliri announced Tuesday afternoon that the death toll had dropped from 50 to 74.
In addition, 164 adults and 23 children were treated in hospitals for burns or other injuries. Of the adults, 71 were still hospitalized, 10 in serious condition. Eleven children were still hospitalized.
Twenty-six of the dead were found in the first light of Tuesday, huddled in a place near the sea in the municipality of Mari, near the port of Rafina. Red Cross rescuers said that they appeared to be families or groups of friends, kissing three or four.
Although the fires decreased considerably in the afternoon, they were not extinguished. The firefighters, with the help of seaplanes, took care of the main lights near the capital: one to the northeast of Athens, near Rafina, where apparently the largest number of dead is produced.
