Ecuadorian coach Octavio Zambrano did not stop at the festivities for Emmene Medellín in the league final. A hug and congratulations with his players were enough, because they still have not pbaded the last stage, surpbad Junior. However, the coach, who took over the team just in June, visualizes the star, the goal set since his arrival.
How did you get this ranking?
We are extremely satisfied with what we have achieved so far, but we are aware that we have one more step to take, and this is something we have been seeing for some time: turn around in Athanasius. That's what we have in mind. We are already focusing on what will happen.
What would it mean to be the first Ecuadorian coach to win the league?
Honestly, I had already thrown some proposals aside because I was not the kind of challenge I wanted to face in my life and in my career. I wanted to take this on, I love the challenges that have something big at the end of the rainbow. I interpreted it as such. When the opportunity to come to Medellín is presented, do not hesitate for a second.
What did you find on your arrival and what do you have now?
I have found above all an excellent group. During the almost two decades that I have to train, it is probably the best or one of the best, as a human being and as a footballer. It's hard to get. In many teams, there are situations to solve. This group is in good health and knows how to receive ideas. Logically, this must be accompanied by results.
After your long career, what did you find here?
Colombia has abundant talent that makes everything easy, because with the raw material to work, no one can complain. What you get from the outside (in the US, Europe, and South America) is what you have to do to make processes go without purpose. It is hoped that they will give it time, but in South America, processes are frustrated by an immediacy mentality, when it is necessary to let it ripen.
Did it happen here?
There was a time when we would lose a few consecutive games and lose others and we could already see that people were a little uncomfortable, worried. But we kept our sanity because we knew that in these results we had not been beaten. We adjusted the screws to get to the end.
When a DT has a scorer like Germán Cano, everything is easier …
Of course. A quota of goals in a team means a lot. We have Germán Ezequiel. However, I must say that it is not a machine, it is a human being and he has had times when he was not as good as usual, and that is Was Juan Caicedo, Andrés Ricaurte and others who had to put their part of the goal. The objectives of Germán Ezequiel are a contribution, but many of them are developed by the team, and that's what I like, is that the objectives are a very good construction, apart from his talent, of course.
And he also has security in the goal with David González …
Totally We would not be here without the contribution of David, because in addition to being one of the team leaders, he brings us at crucial moments, that is, say when we see the size of a player. The share of Cano's goals and the safety of a goalkeeper in this category have been a vital part of who we are now.
How do you badyze Junior?
It's a great team, with talented players and a solid backbone. But there is no invincible rival. We respect it, but we do not believe that Junior is a team that, because of its rolls, exceeds us. They are within reach of the big teams that we can beat, as we did. We say it with the respect that they deserve. We have a goal and we will achieve it, regardless of the rival.
