Researchers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) captured images of Neptune never before.

The images were taken with ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Recently, the facility has been equipped with a new MUSE / GALACSI adaptive optics, and the now disclosed Neptune photographs are the result of a test aimed at demonstrating the telescope's greatest capabilities.

Now, the VLT is able to correct the effects of atmospheric turbulence to create sharper spatial images with the aid of a powerful laser system . Thanks to this advance, the characteristics of various astronomical objects – such as black holes, planets, supernovas and young stars – can be studied in more detail.
