It is imminent that the opening of the gates in Porce 3, this Wednesday, allows to lower the water level to the maximum due to constant rains. Although the process is considered "normal" by EPM, which owns the hydropower plant, which in its view does not involve any latent risk, the surrounding communities have been warned of the increase in the number of waterways.
According to EPM, the goal of the action is to regulate the floods caused by the rivers and, because of this, the Porce 2 tank has been filled to its highest level, spilling Porce 3, which must be evacuated urgently by opening valves. .
Luz Marina Escobar, director of EPM's Operation Generation and Energy, explained that last week, the rains made an important contribution, "but that's among the expectations". He added that, on the night of this Tuesday, they would badyze the levels to begin, this Wednesday at the first hour, the discharge set in Porce 3.
"(…) we would start by opening the floodgates so that the water is routed in a regulated way in the river." With the gates, we control that there are never flows as important as those which enter the reservoir, that is to say that if the reservoirs did not exist, the river would bring its natural increase and there would be no mechanisms to retain it, "he said.
Escobar added that communities in the area of influence were informed of the operation to be carried out as the chains could have an increase.
He indicated that among the tanks of Porce 2 and 3, no community could be affected by the spill and that downstream the miners who exercise this activity on the banks of the river have been notified.
Informed populations
The municipal councils of the risks and firemen of populations like Anorí, Amalfi, Zaragoza and Nechí were warned of this warning, according to the captain René Bolívar, in charge of the Dapard, the highest emergency agency of Antioquia, and have the responsibility to inform their communities about the precautions.
"As a precaution, a call is made to the community to be attentive to the increase in the level of rivers, because there may be bathers or fishermen, it is therefore necessary to take preventive measures", was -he declares.
Zaragoza residents' badociations and media have sent a warning to people on the banks of the Nechí River yesterday, indicating that the river will be higher than usual, it is therefore likely that the lower parts of Zaragoza (downstream) can flood.
In this regard, Escobar pointed out that the siren systems are activated and that the rangers have been informed of the increase in the levels of the tributary.
"Yesterday (Monday), we informed the community.A door opening is never done without warning, it is rigorous and we have a protocol in which we monitor, according to the forecasts, to know when we level, depending on the contributions to the reservoir, "he concluded.
