George Papadopoulos, former advisor to US President Donald Trump, during the 2016 election campaign, entered the jail on Monday to serve a 14-day jail term for lying to the FBI, as part of the Investigation of the Russian conspiracy.
A spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) told Efe that Papadopoulos had appeared Monday at the federal prison in Oxford, Wisconsin state.
The former counselor was sentenced only to 14 days in jail because, in October 2017, he had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, sentenced to a maximum sentence of five years of imprisonment and agreed to collaborate with the special prosecutor Robert Mueller, who was investigating since May 2017. the extent of the alleged Russian interference in the elections.
Papadopoulos, the first man found guilty of Trump's campaign in the Russian conspiracy investigations, will have to spend a year on probation upon release from prison, pay a $ 9,500 fine and pay 200 hours of community work.
The defendant tried unsuccessfully to postpone his entry into prison until a court of appeal ruled on another case in which the legality of Mueller's appointment as a special prosecutor was questioned, but a judge denied his request and ordered compliance with the conditions. the trouble.
The former advisor is the third defendant of the Russian conspiracy to serve a prison sentence.
Papadopoulos, who claims to have never conspired with Russian intelligence services, said today on Twitter: "I still can not believe that today, I will go into the Federal prison camp, the media say that I go through my contacts with Russia. In my life, I met a Russian official. "
In fact, Papadopoulos did not enter prison for his alleged links with the Kremlin, but for lying to the FBI.
Papadopoulos disappointed the FBI about a meeting he had in 2016 with a professor who had links to the Kremlin and promised "thousands of emails" containing compromising information about the Democratic candidate for the Hillary Clinton's elections, but never delivered them. documents.
Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan has already spent a month in jail in Pennsylvania for lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Trump campaign; while another defendant, Richard Pinedo, is currently in a Southern California jail and will remain there until May 2019.
