GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado (AP) – A Colorado city is poised to become the country's seventh-largest city to be fully powered by renewable energy sources.
The Post Independent reported Wednesday that the mayor of Glenwood Springs and an official of the Nebraska Municipal Energy Agency had signed a power supply agreement during a public ceremony held Wednesday at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
Mayor Jonathan Godes said the contract starting June 1 "will provide 100% renewable energy" without further rate increases for city residents, 157 km (253 km) west of Denver.
In April, the city council unanimously approved the purchase of electricity under a wholesale contract with the agency.
In a statement, the city said the switch to 100% wind energy would prevent 77,156 tonnes of CO2 emitted by fossil fuels.
