The Colorado Rockies have said they are investigating after a racial slurs was used by a fan during a batting by Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson, who is black, on Sunday at Coors Field.

Bally Sports Florida’s telecast microphones picked up a fan shouting the N word several times after the second pitch during Brinson’s at-bat in the ninth inning of the Rockies’ 13-8 victory.

“The Colorado Rockies are disgusted by a fan’s racist comments directed at Marlins’ Lewis Brinson in game nine today,” the team said in a post-game statement. “Although the subject was not identified until the end of the game, the Rockies are still investigating this incident.

“The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be expelled and banned from Coors Field.”

Marlins spokesman Jason Latimer told The Associated Press the team was aware of the incident.

“Neither Lewis, nor any other Marlin on the ground or in the shelter, heard what was being shouted,” Latimer told the AP via text. “We have brought the matter to the attention of the Rockies. How the matter is handled, I should defer to them.”

Fans had started to fill Coors Field’s lower deck by the end of the innings, closing in for a post-game concert that was part of a Faith Day celebration.

Team officials were unable to debrief the ushers in the area where the fan shouted insult before the concert ended about an hour later.

Brinson is in the middle of his fourth season with the Marlins. The 27-year-old went 2 for 4 in Sunday’s game with 2 RBIs, and he’s beating .261 this season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
