Colorado Rockies say fan yelled at mascot Dinger, didn’t yell racial slurs at Miami Marlins’ Lewis Brinson

The Colorado Rockies say a fan didn’t yell racist slurs during Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins and the man was instead yelling at the team mascot.

The Rockies said on Sunday they were “disgusted” by what was widely seen as a racial insult directed at Lewis Brinson of Miami, who is black. But the organization told ESPN on Monday that the fan was yelling at Dinger, the team’s dinosaur-themed mascot.

A source confirmed to ESPN that the Rockies contacted the fan as part of the team’s investigation into the incident. The Rockies also contacted another fan sitting near the man, who also told the team that the man was shouting “Dinger,” according to the source.

Denver-based television station 9News first reported on Monday that the Rockies had concluded their investigation into the incident on Sunday.

The man’s screams were picked up by both teams’ shows, although Bally Sports Florida’s show was brighter than Colorado’s because Rockies broadcaster Drew Goodman was speaking at the time.

No one on the pitch, including Brinson, reacted to the screams.

Marlins spokesman Jason Latimer told The Associated Press by text Sunday that “neither Lewis, nor any other Marlin on the pitch or in the dugout, heard what was being shouted.”

Fans had started to fill the stadium’s lower deck by the end of the innings, closing in for a post-game concert that was part of a Faith Day celebration.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
