Local, national and federal authorities are looking for Sol Pais, 18 years old. She made the "credible" – but not specific – threats after making the trip from Miami to Denver on Monday night and is considered dangerous, said Dean Phillips, the special agent in charge of the local FBI office.
After she arrived, she immediately went to a shop and bought a shotgun and ammunition, the FBI announced late Tuesday.
Pais is considered a threat to the community and schools, but there is no information on a specific threat to a particular place, Phillips said.
Nearly 20 school districts in the Denver City will be closed Wednesday for security reasons, just days before the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.
They include the Douglas County School District, Aurora Public Schools, Jefferson County Public Schools, and Cherry Creek Schools. Columbine High School is in Jefferson County.
"Many people work diligently day after day (…) and make the best possible decisions for kids going to school every day," Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader said. "We want our schools to be a safe place for children."
The Colorado Department of Education recommended schools in the Denver area to lock out and release on Tuesday after the alleged threats.
In a lockout, the exterior doors are locked and the school continues normally.
Columbine High and several schools in the area were part of the lockout, tweeted the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

After Pais arrived on Monday in the state and he bought a shotgun and ammunition, she went to the foot of the hills where she was last seen, a said Phillips.
"His comments, his actions that others have told us about tend to worry that it could pose a threat to a school," he added.
The officials published an image of Pais. She was about 5 feet 5 inches and was last seen dressed in a black t-shirt, camouflage pants and black boots, authorities said.
The authorities indicated that they were particularly cautious, as the statements of Pais did not express a specific plan and were for the most part spoken.
"She made statements that threatened the schools and she bought a gun … and that's why she's a credible threat," said Patricia Billinger, spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety's Colorado.
Anniversary of shooting Columbine is this week
The twentieth anniversary of shooting at Columbine High School is in a few days.
On April 20, 1999, two students killed 12 of their classmates and a teacher during a shootout in the Littleton City High School, about 10 kilometers from Denver.
"I know this opens an injury, especially during the wedding anniversary week, for the families most affected by this," said Shrader.
At this point, there may be no probable grounds for stopping Pais, but state and federal prosecutors' offices are working to finalize the appropriate charges, Phillips said. He said that once they would hold it, they would retain it as long as they could legally.
