DENVER (AP) – A Colorado coroner determined that a survivor of the Columbine massacre and an addiction advocate died of an overdose.

The Denver Post reports that the Routt County Coroner's Office announced that an autopsy had determined that the death of Austin Eubanks, aged 37, had been caused by a heroin overdose.

Officials said Eubanks was found by his father on May 18 in his home in Steamboat Springs.

The coroner's report states that the death is an accident caused by an "acute toxicity of heroin".

The report indicates that the Eubanks had a history of opioid dependence and illicit drug abuse.

Eubanks survived a gunshot wound, but lost his best friend in the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, 21 kilometers south of Denver.

He became a nationally recognized speaker on addiction and recovery after overcoming his own fight against painkillers.
