Columbus Crew SC 1, Portland Timbers 3 | Summary of the match MLS 2019

The Portland Timbers won their first win of the season on Saturday night, beating the Columbus Crew 3-1 at MAPFRE Stadium.

Although Columbus appeared to be the aggressors at first, Portland was more opportunistic with his limited chances. The visitors scored the first goal – for the first time this season – at half an hour. Diego Valeri lifted a free kick from the top of the arc to the left post, where Larrys Mabiala got up to score a ball in Zack Steffen's head.

Portland doubled his lead a few minutes later, this time with Jeremy Ebobisse and Sebastian Blanco, pushing the ball to the left of the Argentinian before hitting Blanco's pass without scoring anything.

Columbus had one when Pedro Santos took advantage of Jeff Attinella's dubious pass and put him on top of the other goalkeeper, but Portland's Jorge Moreira put the game out of Steffen's reach.

Three things

  • THE GREAT IMAGE: Tonight 's victory helped stop the bleeding of the finalists of the 2018 MLS Cup. It was not only their first win of the year, but the first time that they have scored the first goal, and the first time that they held an opponent within two goals. For Columbus, their struggles in the last third continue – and were more remarkable compared to Portland's clinical finishes.
  • MOMENT OF THE GAME: As stated above, Portland has not yet scored the first goal of any year. Mabiala's goal was therefore huge, as it allowed the Timbers to finally play with a lead (although Steffen may want to do another of these actions):
  • MAN OF THE GAME: Sebastian Blanco was rewarded for his two assists, his fun game with Ebobisse and the implementation of Moreira rocket.
