Come on, come on power Ranger: Phillies 3, Pirates 0

The Phillies desperately needed a strong start from Ranger Suarez. They were hoping for at least seven rounds to preserve their overworked enclosure. What they got were nine of the most effective innings the Phillies have seen this year, as they outscored the Pirates 3-0 for their fifth straight win.

The previous four games in the winning streak were come-from-behind type wins. As the score of 3-0 indicates, a comeback was not necessary this time around. They scored first thanks to another young player who excels who is given a chance.

The Phillies took the advice of this site and beat Matt Vierling early on. And indeed it worked well! Vierling was on the base three times, including this:

Perhaps inspired by his young teammate, Bryce Harper also placed one in the seats later in the round.

Brad Miller added an insurance run with a single RBI in the fifth, but honestly Suarez didn’t need it. He allowed just four hits and erased two via double plays. He finished all nine innings with just 97 shots.

The Phillies will go for the sweep tomorrow. Unfortunately, they will have to rely on a set of enclosures. The specter of Phillies relievers being forced to pitch nine innings is always intimidating, but thanks to Suarez’s efforts, they will at least be well rested.
