“Coming 2 America” hits Amazon early; Eddie Murphy Sequel has also booked some theaters – Deadline

If you turn on your Amazon Prime, you’ll see that Eddie Murphy’s long-awaited sequel Coming 2 America may already air, a full day before its release date on Friday, March 5.

Basically what happened here is that Coming 2 America was a worldwide release on Prime, as an insider explained to me, so it largely dropped everywhere at once. I was told the movie was available as of 5pm PST.

A similar situation occurred when Amazon gave up Borat’s Later Movie Film back in October; it dropped earlier in some time zones long before its Oct. 23 debut.

Coming from America, which was originally slated to be released by Paramount on Christmas, is also getting a theatrical release via Amazon in select theaters this weekend. Here in Los Angeles, the Vineland Drive-In is playing the feature film. In Atlanta, Georgia, the sequel takes place at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema and Starlight Drive-In. Deadline first reported that the Craig Brewer sequel directed by the 1988 hit film Murphy was snapped up by the streamer for $ 125 million.
