Georgia will learn the status of their 10th and final game against Missouri on Friday, but based on comments from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, that game will be played.
Sankey spoke about the desire of every SEC team to play all of their scheduled games to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.
“We are always moving forward with the opportunity for our 14 teams to play 10 games,” Sankey said.
Sankey’s comments follow the cancellation of the CCA games for Clemson and Notre Dame so they have a week off before playing the CCA Championship game on December 19.
Notre Dame, who came second in the most recent college football playoff standings, clinched her spot in the championship game when her game against Wake Forest was won. No.3 Clemson needs a victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday to do the same.
Sankey made specific comments about the move, particularly after the ACC made it clear he was going to play 10 conference games, when during the preseason there were indications the SEC wanted to go to a nine-game conference schedule.
“I watched as they moved their championship from the 12th to the 19th to make that date available,” Sankey said of the decision. “I’m sure they will talk about this decision making. We have had teams that have won division championships in the past three weeks to the end of the season, and they continue to play games.
Florida and Alabama can clinch places in the SEC Championship game with wins on Saturday. While both teams could potentially get a week’s rest, Sankey has made it clear that the extra play helps both teams in the playoffs. Alabama is the nation’s No.1 team while Florida is No.6. Texas A&M, which has moved several games due to COVID-19, is No.5.
Asked Tuesday, Georgia coach Kirby Smart said he didn’t know anything about the lineup for the game against Missouri. Both teams were originally scheduled to play on November 14, but the game had to be moved due to COVID-19 and contact tracing in Missouri. The Tigers have played the past two weeks, picking up victories over South Carolina and Vanderbilt in the process.
“I mean, I definitely hope – I hope [December] 12e, but I think they have maybe two makeup sets, ”Smart said. “I don’t know where this will end up happening. I know we’re supposed to find out soon, because this week’s games are confirmed and people are having no issues. We hope to find out soon, but I’m not sure. “
The SEC has announced it will announce the dates of all remaining games December 12 and December 19 on Friday. Game times and television networks for these contests will be announced on Sunday.
Georgia will play Vanderbilt this Saturday while Missouri will face Arkansas.
