Community mourns death of Nassau County MP shot dead during traffic stop

NASSAU COUNTY, FL – Nassau County MP Joshua Moyers, who had clung to life after being shot dead early Friday morning during a traffic stop, died Sunday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.

He was 29 years old.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Deputy Josh Moyers this afternoon, September 26, 2021 at 2:19 pm at UF Health in Jacksonville. Please keep Josh’s family and fiancée in your thoughts and your prayers as we go through this terrible tragedy, ”Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper wrote in a press release.

Deputy Josh Moyers, 35, joined the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office in 2015.

A procession in honor of Moyers from UF Health to the medical examiner’s office took place on Sunday evening.

MP Moyers died after being shot twice by a suspect who MPs said was still at large on Sunday afternoon.

Leeper, who said on Saturday that Moyers should not survive and added that medical staff at UF Health Jacksonville had done everything possible to save Moyers.

“They are some of the best of the best, and there was nothing they could do for Josh,” said Leeper.

Leeper said the family, including Moyers’ fiancee, decided to donate his organs to keep him alive until matches can be found.

Leeper said Moyers is the third deputy he has lost in the line of duty since becoming sheriff – and the second this year. Deputy Jack Gwynes died of complications from COVID-19 in February.

The Moyers family in an online fundraiser asked for donations to support MP Ivy’s fiancee. So far he has raised over $ 8,500.
