Semi-autobiographical black and white drama by Kenneth Branagh Belfast won the TIFF People’s Choice Award on Saturday night, affirming his status as a major player to face in the 2022 Oscar race.

Jessica Chastain (Tammy Faye’s eyes) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The power of the dog, Louis Wain’s electric life) were also the big winners of the TIFF Tribute Awards ceremony, which closed the 46th edition of the festival, winning its Actor Awards.

The TIFF Ebert Director Award was presented to Duneby Denis Villeneuve, with musician Dionne Warwick (subject of doc Dionne Warwick: Don’t give up on me) receiving a special tribute award. Other major titles recognized in Toronto tonight included The rescue-the last doc of To free Solo coxswains Jimmy Chin and E. Chai Vasarhelyi—and the Palme d’Or from Julia Ducournau, Titanium.

“2021 brought an exceptional selection of films which thrilled Festival audiences around the world”, TIFF Co-Directors Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey said in announcing the 2021 winners. “Our lineup featured beloved writers alongside new voices in film, including many powerful women. TIFF has welcomed guests, the press, industry, international stars and directors to the city and to theaters. The vast array of cinematic narratives from around the world is a testament to the uniqueness of the films in the making. We are so grateful and proud of this year’s Festival.

This year’s TIFF Awards Ceremony was produced by Bell Media Studios, with speakTyrone Edwards and Chloe Wilde return as hosts. It opened with an introduction by Sigourney Weaver, who was at the festival with his drama, The Good House. SSpecial tributes were presented by Shamier Anderson, Kirsten Dunst, Rebecca Ferguson, Emma Ferreira, Gladys Knight, Phillip Lewitski, Eva Longoria, David Oyelowo, Michael Showalter and Kiefer Sutherland.
