Earlier today, Apple launched Apple News +, a new subscription service to access hundreds of magazines in the Apple News app priced at $ 9.99 / mo. You can read my overview and my first impressions here.
After taking a first look at Apple News + with my American Apple ID and noticing the differences between optimized magazines in Apple News format and those standard "PDF type", I thought it would be interesting and useful to compile the complete list of all magazines. currently available to Apple News + subscribers in the United States.
You will find below the complete list of 241 magazines available for Apple News + in the United States. The list was compiled by checking all the magazines featured in the "Browse Catalog" section of Apple News +, as well as individual categories. Apple announces that "300 publications" are available in Apple News +; I think the list below is shorter for two reasons:
- These are just magazines. I did not count newspapers (The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times) and digital publishers.
- Apple News + has just been launched. Some magazines may not be available yet. In fact, I had to add a little more before publishing this article.
To create this list, I manually opened each magazine and indicated whether its last issue used the Apple News format or the standard PDF format. Magazines supporting the Apple News format are identified by "(ANF)" in the list. The breakdown between Apple News Format magazines and standard magazines is fairly even: 116 magazines use the richer Apple News format in their last issue, while 125 of them rely on traditional PDFs (probably the format used by the old Texture service).
In simpler terms, this means that 48% of the magazines I've counted in this list use the Apple News format. As I wrote in my preview earlier today, I hope that more and more publishers will adopt the more versatile and mobile Apple News format in future issues.
