The Cubs crushed the gasoline and settled the cruise for the Friday afternoon game, but they will have to win at least one of these weekend tournaments. This is especially true when they face opponents like the cardinals with whom they know each other very well.
Kyle Schwarber is back in first place after giving up his role to Anthony Rizzo for a match. Kris Bryant is third, Rizzo takes third place and Javy Báez cleans up. Willson Contreras catches up, Jason Heyward is right, David Bote is second and Albert Almora Jr. is in the middle.
Joe Maddon recently said he felt Almora's success against right-handers this season. could be a small sample luckily, Carlos González has run a lot. But perhaps it was simply an unnecessarily brutal way to say that they wanted to throw the new guy right into the depths of the pool right away. AlAl has hit like an everyday player and it looks like he has become one again.
Jack Flaherty, who faces the Cubs for the third time. His repertoire includes a mid-90s heater, a biting slider and a change that has been very effective despite limited use. Flaherty is a hard-hit pitcher with excellent control, accumulating 73 strikeouts over 20 goals. He hit 15 – eight of whom came last weekend – against no goals in his last two games, though the Cubs had four free passes from him last month.
He also gave 11 home runs in just under 65 innings, three of which were hit by Cubs. His mistakes have been punished. Keeping that in mind, the Cubs should go there in hopes of getting something in the area right off the bat. Left-handers will see four seams or curves near 80% of the time needed to open the appearances of the plates and the right-handed ones will see a similar relationship, with the cursor as secondary.
No matter what, these mixes are pretty similar, and Flaherty is comfortable launching all his actions for strikes. If the Cubs manage to time and jump into mistakes, they have a very good chance of continuing to crush as we have seen all season. With two games in as many games against Flaherty so far this season, expect Rizzo to make some strong contacts at this match.
Jon Lester, who seems to have recovered the cutting machine after a really ugly stretch last month, is getting ready for the Cubs. He's going to keep the Cubs in, so it's all about the suspended attack.
The first Wrigley launch is at 6:15 pm, Paris time on FOX, but you can still set 670 The Score if you prefer the local flavor. The FOX practice of occasionally using the local team's play-by-play broadcaster makes their coverage much more bearable, but tonight's game is Joe Buck and John Smoltz.
