Confirmation hearing for Biden’s spy chief candidate postponed

The DNI “plays a critical role in overseeing the 18 agencies that make up our country’s intelligence community, and the committee looks forward to holding a hearing next week with Ms. Haines,” they added.

It was not immediately clear whether the session would be postponed before or after next Wednesday’s inauguration.

Key context: Haines’ confirmation hearing was supposed to be the first for Biden’s cabinet. Instead, Haines joins a host of other national security choices awaiting their chance to appear on Capitol Hill, including proposed leaders from DHS, State Department and Pentagon.

The transition process has been marred by delays as President Donald Trump has spent months baselessly claiming that Biden stole the election. This was further complicated by the Senate’s double second round in Georgia which ultimately upended the balance of power in the upper house.

A new threat to the establishment of Biden’s team could be Trump’s impending second impeachment trial, which likely won’t start until next week.

Biden urged his former colleagues to move the trial forward while confirming his nominees and continuing his agenda.
