KINSHASA, Congo (AP) – The Congolese Ministry of Health confirms the first case of Ebola in Congo in the city of Goma, where more than 2 million people live.
The regional capital located in eastern Congo lies on the border with Rwanda, a country that is preparing for a possible epidemic since the beginning of the epidemic almost a year ago.
The person whose confirmed case was announced Sunday night is a pastor who was in the town of Butembo.
This announcement marks a serious escalation of the Ebola crisis in Congo. The epidemic that began last August is already the second deadliest in history.
More than 1,600 people in eastern Congo have died because of the spread of the virus in areas that are too dangerous for health teams. There is an experimental vaccine, but it has not been universally accepted by the inhabitants of the region.
