Conor McGregor has chronic arthritis, the NAC asked about the tape

Following Conor McGregor’s broken leg and his subsequent claims that the UFC was aware of a pre-existing injury, promotion chairman Dana White said ankle issues existed long before the UFC 264.

In an interview with “Watters’ World” on Fox News, White was asked if it was known that McGregor was suffering from an injury. White then revealed that McGregor had suffered from “chronic arthritis” for years, but did not directly respond to the Irishman’s claim that he had almost withdrawn due to a known stress fracture.

“(McGregor) has had ankle problems for (the) last few years,” White said. “He had asked if he could tape his ankles before this fight and he got clearance to do so from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and then he chose not to tape them. I do not know why. He has chronic ankle arthritis.

McGregor, 33, broke his leg with seconds left in the first round of his July 10 trilogy fight against rival Dustin Poirier. The fight was called off by the cage doctor and McGregor underwent successful surgery the next day.

Shortly after, McGregor posted a selfie video where he said Dana White and UFC doctor Dr Davidson knew about stress fractures before UFC 264.

“I was injured before the fight,” McGregor said. “People would ask me when the leg broke – when did the leg break? Ask Dana White. Ask the UFC. Ask Dr. Davidson, the chief medical officer of the UFC. They knew. My leg – I had stress fractures in my leg entering this cage. There was some debate about taking the thing off because I was training without shin guards and kicking.

His comments come days after NAC executive director Bob Bennett said on Friday the command body was not aware of any serious injuries before the fight.

“If we ever knowingly had information about a fighter who wasn’t fit to fight, we wouldn’t let them compete,” Bennett told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It would go to a doctor and a doctor would make that decision as an expert.”

As for McGregor’s future, White isn’t sure. McGregor’s recovery is estimated to take a year and White is waiting to see how things go.

“It’s going to take him a year to get over this one before he can come back, so I don’t know,” White said. “We’ll see. The fighting game is a difficult game and the child has built a massive legacy and made a lot of money. We will see how the rest of his career unfolds.

UFC 264 took place on Saturday, July 10 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card was released on pay-per-view after preliminaries on ESPN / ESPN +.
