Mazda has outperformed all of its competition by being named Consumer Reports’ Most Trusted Car Maker this year.
Every year, Consumer Reports polls its members about issues they’ve encountered with their vehicles over the past 12 months. For 2020, the outlet received responses on around 329,000 vehicles, built from the 2000-2020 model years. They then looked at 17 problem areas, ranging from small issues like squeaky brakes to major issues like out-of-warranty transmission repairs, and weighted the severity of each type of problem.
Mazda took the top spot, in large part because it “carefully redesigns models and has avoided introducing risky new powertrains and infotainment systems.” Consumer Reports added that the Japanese brand’s line-up also benefits from many shared platforms and components.

Toyota and Lexus finished second and third respectively. All Toyota models had average or better reliability, although the RAV4 was a bit disappointing with average reliability, linked to minor transmission issues and other issues. Lexus’ rating was marred by the much below-average reliability of the LS sedan, but all other models had “exceptional reliability.”
Buick placed fourth overall, gaining 14 spots from last year. In fifth place is Honda, up seven places from last year as its ranking affected by the below-average reliability of the Passport, which has drivetrain issues and empty or frozen infotainment systems.
Hyundai was sixth overall, ahead of Ram in seventh, Subaru in eighth, Porsche in ninth and Dodge in tenth.
