Providence coach Ed Cooley chose to stay with the brothers after meeting with Michigan officials on Monday, who agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

The school officially announced Tuesday that Cooley had withdrawn his name from Michigan, who is seeking to replace John Beilein, the new coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"Although it is very flattering to be considered for other head coaching positions, after talking with my family, I decided to stay in my home town. of Providence, "said Cooley. "The brothers are my family, and most importantly, my commitment is to my players and my team in Providence."

Cooley, born in Providence throughout his life, is the new coach of the brothers for eight seasons. He led them to five consecutive NCAA tournaments from 2014 to 2018, before finishing 18-16 last season.

"We are delighted to announce that Ed Cooley will continue to lead our men's basketball program," said Sports Director Bob Driscoll. "We think Ed is one of the best coaches in the country."

Michigan could now turn to Miami Heat's assistant and former Michigan star Juwan Howard, whom the Wolverines were scheduled to interview on Tuesday. They also met Luke Yaklich and Saddi Washington, Beilein's assistants in recent years.

LaVall Jordan, coach of Butler, and Shaka Smart, of Texas, were also associated with this position.
