A massive, multi-agency search is underway on Saturday in a “vast” Florida wildlife sanctuary for Brian Laundrie, Gabby Petito’s boyfriend from Long Island, authorities said.
Authorities with scent-tracking dogs roam the T. Mabry Carlton Preserve, a lush 24,565-acre wildlife habitat in Sarasota County for 23-year-old Laundrie, considered by police to be a person of interest in the disappearance of Petito.
“The North Port Police Department, FBI and partner agencies are currently conducting a search (on the reserve),” North Port Police tweeted at 10:36 am “His family says they believe he entered the area. area earlier this week. More details when they become available.
North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor said authorities were using clothing taken from Laundrie’s home during a police search Friday night to help the dogs locate him.
Researchers will go “wherever the dogs take them,” Taylor added. “It is a vast territory.
Laundrie has been silent about the disappearance of his 22-year-old girlfriend since returning home alone to their Florida home on September 1 after the two took a van trip across the country.
The laundry has not been seen since Tuesday. Police raided his home on Friday evening and authorities are expected to issue a statement about their search later on Saturday.
Petito’s family released a statement Friday evening saying the laundry was not missing but “hiding” from authorities.
