Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced on Sunday that he would not be joining his team on Thursday to celebrate his World Series title at the White House.

In a Spanish statement sent to El Nuevo Dia, Cora explained that Puerto Rico still had not recovered from Hurricane Maria in 2017 for making its decision.

In January, the Puerto Rican native said his island needed help in the event of a hurricane. He had then said that he could miss out on the visit of the traditional champion in Washington about President Donald Trump's policy towards Puerto Rico.

The Red Sox will head to the White House on Thursday, a day off after a three-game series in Baltimore against the Orioles.

Cora is not the only member of the Red Sox not to be present. Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rafael Devers are among the team players who have announced that they would avoid the visit.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
