One of baseball’s most remarkable records has been tied. Still.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes threw 10 strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, tying a record held by Tom Seaver, who made it in 1970, and Aaron Nola, who did so earlier. this season.

Burnes, among the top contenders for this year’s NL Cy Young Award, simply dominated the Cubs’ exhausted roster:

A single from Matt Duffy, the No.2 victim of batting strikes, ended the streak, but not before Burnes tied a record that had not been touched for 51 years until Nola do the same in June.

This achievement was apparently news to Burnes as he entered the dugout, via Bally Sports Wisconsin:

“I had no idea. When I walked in, [someone] said something and I was like ‘What did I do? Why are we throwing the ball out of play? What is going on? I had no idea.”

This isn’t the first time Burnes has made strikeout history this year. His 58 straight strikeouts to open the season shattered the pre-existing MLB record of 40 previously held by Kenley Jansen.

Burnes would eventually finish with an eight-inning line, four hits, zero runs, zero walks and 15 strikeouts to improve his ERA to 2.23. The Brewers won 10-0.
