Corey Davis makes a strong impression on Jets debut

CHARLOTTE, NC – Corey Davis brought out the Smart Jets for signing him this offseason on his debut on Sunday.

Davis, who signed a three-year, $ 37.5 million contract in March, had five catches for 97 yards and scored both Jets touchdowns.

Davis was one of the highlights of the 19-14 loss to the Panthers. After the game, however, Davis was not going to congratulate himself. As a veteran from a winning team with the Titans, he said he liked the signs he was seeing of a young Jets team.

“We’re in the process of building this thing,” Davis said. “There will be growing pains. Obviously we wish we could have picked up this one, but there is a lot to learn from this one. “

Davis and rookie quarterback Zach Wilson hung on for 35-yard, 22-yard, and 20-yard passes. The 22-yarder was on a touchdown where Wilson rushed in and found a wide-open Davis in the end zone.

“Zach was sort of pushing himself around. I was just trying to stay alive, ”Davis said. “It’s something that we work on practicing, scrambling drills and it hit me.”

Bettor Braden Mann injured his left knee in the first quarter after teammate Daniel Brown (who was flagged for detention) blocked a Panthers defenseman against him. He did not return to the game. That left kicker Matt Ammendola on a punt. He did a good job with six punts, averaging 48.5 with two inside 20s and a 65-yard long.

“Great job on his part,” said Jets coach Robert Saleh. “I thought he didn’t care for not really practicing it. … He just stepped in and did a really good job. Hats off to him. I wish we had given him a field goal [opportunity] somewhere, but I think he did a great job.

Former Jets WR Robby Anderson only had one strike against his former team, but it was a big catch. He caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold in the second quarter to give Carolina a 9-0 lead. The Jets did not sign Anderson as a free agent in 2020, which allowed him to move to Carolina. Anderson admitted that this game had special meaning for him.

“Of course, but the most important thing was the victory,” said Anderson. “I’m more excited about it. I have to make a bit of a punchy game and remind them.

Lt. Mekhi Becton left the game with a knee injury in the third quarter. NFL Network reported that the first tests showed it to be an MCL sprain, which means Becton should be back this season. With Becton absent, George Fant moved on to the left tackle and Morgan Moses played to the right. Fant and Moses competed for good tackling work throughout the camp and Fant won the competition, starting on Sunday. … LB Jamien Sherwood (foot), safety Lamarcus Joyner (elbow), LB Blake Cashman (hamstrings) and Mann (left knee) were all injured.
