Coronavirus infections in England have fallen by nearly a third since the country entered its second lockdown, swab tests on 105,000 volunteers have shown.
There was a 30% drop in cases across the country in nearly a fortnight this month, with 96 people infected per 10,000 between November 13 and 24, compared to 132 per 10,000 between October 26 and November 2.
The R number, which indicates the transmit level, is now 0.88. Any number greater than 1 means that the virus is growing exponentially.
The results of the government-funded React mass surveillance study have been greeted as evidence that the England-wide lockdown that began on November 5 and the tiered restriction system that has it have succeeded in reducing the transmission of the virus:
