California farm workers contracted Covid at nearly three times the rate from other residents

California farm workers have contracted Covid-19 at nearly three times the rate from other state residents, a new study has found, laying bare the risks faced by those who keep a $ 50 billion industry at bay. flow.

Agricultural workers were deemed “essential” and therefore continued to work throughout the duration of the pandemic. Epidemiologists already knew that this predominantly Latin American workforce was disproportionately affected by the virus, with Latin Americans being five to seven times more at risk of death from Covid-19 than whites in the United States.

But a study from the University of California at Berkeley, released Wednesday, is the first to explore the prevalence of infection rates among the workforce putting food on tables across America.

The study interviewed 1,091 farm workers from mid-July to the end of November in the Salinas Valley, where more than 50,000 farm workers live. The main findings include that 13% of those workers tested during that five-month period tested positive. In comparison, only 5% of all Californians tested came back positive. The study also found that one in five of the workers tested tested positive for antibodies, meaning they had been infected some time before.

Of the positive cases among agricultural workers, 45% of these cases were asymptomatic. The study found that 57% of workers who reported experiencing symptoms and 58% who exhibited symptoms and then tested positive continued to work when they had symptoms:
