The coronavirus pandemic has triggered an exodus from the country’s most densely populated areas, particularly New York and the San Francisco Bay Area, according to a new report.
According to U-Haul, which analyzed migration trends in 2020, these once prosperous areas have seen an overwhelming demand for one-way rentals, indicating that many do-it-yourself movers were looking to escape to less-traveled destinations.

Searching for more space amid the ongoing pandemic, a number of Americans have found themselves in neighboring states such as Connecticut or Nevada. However, others escaped even further to Texas, Utah, Virginia, Maryland and Florida, data shows.

The Bay Area and New York City were among “the most popular emigration markets” during this three-month period as well as throughout 2020.

However, the report said San Francisco was “the epicenter of the Bay Area exodus” with departures accounting for nearly 60% of all one-way U-Haul traffic from March through June.
During that same three-month period, arrivals in New York’s five boroughs fell 58% from 2019, while departures “were only held back by the limited inventory of the fleet. when the trucks left town “.

Top 10 Bay Area movers destinations included other areas of California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Texas, Utah, United ‘Idaho and New Mexico.
However, the top 10 destinations for New York movers were New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Rhode Island, and North Carolina.
U-Haul migration trend data has been compiled from more than 2 million one-way truck transactions over the past year.
