FORT THOMAS, KY. (WLWT) – A coroner on Friday confirmed a 13-year-old northern Kentucky cheerleader who died suddenly as a result of streptococcal infection.
Lilliana Schalck, a student from Highlands Middle School, died suddenly in February while participating with the private cheerleading team Premiere Athletics at a competition in Columbus.
She fell ill during the competition and was taken to a nearby hospital. This is where his condition quickly deteriorated.
A recently released coroner's report indicates that the 13-year-old girl died of a disseminated bacterial infection as a result of a group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus.
"Apparently, an underlying streptococcal infection has overwhelmed his immune system almost without warning, and catastrophic results," a statement from the Schalck family said. "We knew this report was coming, and honestly, we had mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it does not change anything for us. But, on the other hand, we would not wish this nightmare to anyone and perhaps this report could help prevent a similar outcome for someone else. Lilliana would surely help if she could, and this is just an extension of that spirit. "
Lilliana Schalck has marked history with highland athletics, the first of two grade eight students to be part of the team of university cheerleaders this year. She also encouraged two teams at the Premiere Athletics cheerleading competition gym.
"I wanted to support her, so we would have something to say," said her father, Dan Schalck. "You know, driving is quiet at five o'clock of an event if there is nothing to tell."
His father was a proud father and certainly had something to be proud of.
"She found her natural calling and took off with her," he said. "She put to work. She put in the hours. We are at the gym 20 hours a week, I do not know how long. "
Dan Schalck said he did not notice any warning signs or anything out of the ordinary for his daughter. She was healthy and fit. She was complaining of an injury to the hamstrings. She also caught a little cold last week, but her father thought she had fought.
Then, a few minutes before his staging, his coach found Dan Schalck and told him that his daughter was not behaving like her.
Now, as her teammates finish their season, her friends pay homage to her.
After the death of the teenager, a scholarship fund was created in her name. A new reward will go to an athlete who embodies the values of Schalck.
