DENVER – Denver Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed Tuesday that a body found Sunday in northwest Wyoming was that of Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito and that her death was the result of a homicide.
Teton County (Wyoming) Coroner Dr Brent Blue made the decision and said Petito’s cause of death was still pending final autopsy results.
“The FBI’s commitment to justice is at the forefront of every investigation,” FBI Denver Special Agent Michael Schneider said in a written statement. “The FBI and our partners remain committed to ensuring that anyone responsible for or complicit in Ms. Petitio’s death is held accountable for their actions. Mr. Brian Laundrie was named Person of Interest. Anyone with information regarding Mr. Laundrie’s role in this case or his current whereabouts should contact the FBI.
Investigators from the FBI, National Park Service, Teton County authorities and Jackson Police were among those who discovered Petito’s body on Sunday in the scattered Spread Creek camping area in a remote area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, just south of Grand Teton National Park. .
The FBI is still asking anyone who was in the Spread Creek camping area between August 27 and August 30, or who may have seen or spoken with Petito or Laundrie, or seen their vehicle, to contact investigators at 303-629 -7171, 1-800-CALL-FBI or the FBI whistleblower line.
Investigators served a search warrant at Laundrie’s Florida home on Monday, and the search continues for Laundrie at a large nature reserve near her parents’ home after she went missing on Friday.
Petito was reported missing on September 11 after Laundrie returned to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida on September 1, after a trip across the country involving the two. Petito’s family had said they last spoke with her on August 25, while in Grand Teton National Park.
A body camera video released earlier this month captured the two in Moab, Utah, following a scuffle, though police refused to press charges for the incident and separated them for the night.
“The FBI Denver thanks the public for their continued support for this investigation and the valuable advice that has been submitted,” Acting FBI Denver Public Affairs Specialist Courtney Bernal said Tuesday. “FBI Denver appreciates the cooperation of all agencies and personnel who have assisted in the search, recovery and identification efforts. We extend our sincere condolences to Gabby’s family, friends and everyone whose lives she touched.
