The family of Juan Manuel Correa has published an update on the state of the American pilot while he is recovering from injuries sustained in the accident that killed his rival Anthoine Hubert.

Last Saturday, on the Belgian Spa-Francorchamps circuit, Correa was involved in a collision with Hubert after the French driver lost control of his car at the Raidillon high-speed corner. Hubert was pronounced dead several hours later.

Correa has spent the week since the accident in intensive care. Originally, he reportedly had leg fractures and a spinal injury. He underwent a four-hour surgery in Liege. Earlier this week, he was transferred to ICU in the UK.

On Saturday, the family reported that new complications had emerged.

The full statement said, "First of all, on behalf of our son, we wish to thank everyone, inside and outside the motor sport community, for the wonderful, benevolent wishes we have received, as well as the messages We are convinced that Juan Manuel will review all of them himself once he is again in charge of his accounts on social networks.

"Over time, new complications have emerged as a result of the massive impact he suffered on Saturday in Belgium." When he arrived in London, Juan Manuel was diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome. It is an injury considered common in high impact accidents such as this one.

"Unfortunately, this injury caused Juan Manuel to fall in acute respiratory failure." ECO Juan Manuel is in critical but stable condition and we are confident that our son will surprise us as he always does with his tremendous fighting spirit and strength and that he will recover completely.

"At this moment, we kindly ask that our privacy and our space be respected. As a family, we must get together and be 100% present for Juan Manuel.

"Maria and I wish to take this opportunity to express our condolences to the Hubert family for mourning their loss. Our heart is broken and we can only imagine the pain that this loss has caused them."

On Friday, Correa's teammate Callum Ilott provided a stirring pole for the Sauber Junior team before the F2 selection race at Monza.
