When the eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette debuted in 2019, it was said to be unadjustable due to its locked ECU. That hasn’t stopped some people from trying, including YouTuber Emelia Hartford, and her persistence has paid off. Barring the existence of an unknown C8 owner who goes fast while avoiding the limelight, she owns the fastest mid-engined Vette in the world.
How fast are we talking? The aptly named Phoenix with Hartford at the wheel headed to Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., with the goal of beating 9.95 seconds in a boosted C8 built by Extreme Turbo Systems. She started the day with a stint in the middle of 10 seconds, driving her C8 through street air scorching gasoline. Races continued to fall in the 10 second range between low and middle, as further changes were made despite adding much more horsepower. Switching to methanol racing fuel, the Vette produced 1,000 horsepower but wheel slip was an issue in the first two. and second gear.
After a cooldown break and track re-preparation, Hartford ran 9.98 but the next heat finally set the new record at 9.90. Sensing the car had more to give, the tuning continued and she took a step path with a 9.47 out of 11 pounds of turbocharging supercharging. With the previous record well and truly shattered, track officials advised him to call it a day before breaking the car. In true racing fashion, she ignored the advice and finished with her fastest run of all: 9.41 seconds at 144.84 mph with an impressive 1.41 60 feet. The Phoenix is indeed a very fast car.

Why is he called Phoenix? We reported on Hartford’s C8 adventure late last summer, when the first edition of its boosted Vette experienced major engine issues. The factory has been completely rebuilt with the aim of handling up to 1200hp, and to solve the locked ECU issue, the car actually has a separate and self-contained Holley ECU to handle fuel, timing, the boost and other parameters. As such, the orange-trimmed C8 recently emerged from its proverbial ashes with its engine refreshed, and this drag strip video tells about its first proper assessment.
