Costco Wholesale will require face shield employees and medically exempt customers to wear at least one face shield instead, starting Monday. The new warehouse club rule comes as the nation grapples with the rapidly spreading COVID-19 that has killed more than 242,000 Americans so far this year.
As with the face mask policy that has been in effect at Costco since early May, children under 2 are exempt from the new mandate. “This updated policy may seem inconvenient to some, but we believe the added security is worth any inconvenience,” he added.
Costco – which operates 802 warehouses worldwide, 558 in 45 U.S. states and Puerto Rico – said masks and face shields should not be seen as “a substitute for social distancing” and urged shoppers to continue this convenient.
Other large retailers, including Target, Walmart, and CVS also require clients must wear masks.
Since April, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised Americans to wear sheet masks in public places and recently updated their guidelines to indicate that wearing a face mask protects the wearer and others.
Face shields are used for eye protection but are not recommended by the CDC as a replacement for masks.
“The CDC does not recommend using face shields or glasses in place of masks,” the CDC guidelines say. “Face shields have large spaces under and along the face, where your respiratory droplets can escape and reach others around you. At the moment, we don’t know how much protection a face shield offers people around. you.”
