Cougars win 26-17, ending Utah’s winning streak

The latest on the Saturday rivalry match between the Utes and Cougars football teams.

Final: BYU 26, Utah 17

The Cougars bought everything they had and were rewarded for it.

BYU defeated Utah on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium, eventually becoming Utah after nine straight losses. Dozens of BYU students rushed to the field after the final buzzer sounded.

Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall threw three touchdowns and amassed 149 passing yards and 92 rushing yards. Running back Tyler Allgeier ran for 109 yards on 27 carries.

Utes quarterback Charlie Brewer scored 15 of 26 for 147 yards. He threw a touchdown pass and an interception.

Utah has had four turnovers.

Max Hall makes an appearance

BYU hasn’t beaten Utah in nine straight games. That’s part of why Saturday’s game between the two rivals is so important.

Jaren Hall started against the Utes, hoping to help break Utah’s streak. But another Hall was actually at the game.

Former Cougars QB Max Hall (no connection to Jaren Hall) aired on ESPN. He was the last quarterback to beat a Utes team.

With the way the game went, both Halls might have a reason to celebrate.

Cougars kicker Jacob Oldroyd scores his second field goal of the night to give BYU some breathing space with 3:17 to go.

Micah Bernard marks BYU 23, Utah 17

Bernard, one of Utah’s top running backs, bounced off Cougars tackles and ran 22 yards for a touchdown with 9:31 left in the fourth quarter.

That puts the Utes down to just one touchdown after falling 23-7 early in the fourth quarter.

It rains a lot of rain

It started to rain heavily in Provo between the third and fourth quarters. The rain was so heavy that ESPN announcers said players should make sure to keep the football wet.

Those who watched the game in person also started posting on social media about the rain.

BYU 23, Utah 10

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Jadon Redding netted a 47-yard field goal to reduce BYU’s lead to less than 14 points.

End of 3: BYU 23, Utah 7

Hall throws his third touchdown pass, this time to Gunner Romney for 4 yards. With 38 seconds to play in the third quarter, the Cougars got some separation.

Hall used two impressive running games in a row to give BYU the field position for the touchdown. He now has 64 rushing yards, the most of the team.

Utah misses a basket

The Utes had the opportunity to reduce their deficit with 4:35 left in the third quarter. But Jadon Redding missed a 49-yard wide basket on the right.

The Utes convert their first third down the game

After four failed attempts, Utah finally pulled off a third conversion.

It happened halfway through the third quarter on third and sixth. Brewer threw 37 yards at Jakob Robinson. The game was also Utah’s biggest game in terms of distance.

The Utes are now 1 in 5 on the third downs.

Halftime: BYU 16, Utah 7

Hall passes to wide receiver Samson Nacua for a 2-yard touchdown. Nacua has now scored a touchdown for the Utes and Cougars in the rivalry between the two teams.

The forward play allowed the situation that led to the touchdown. Hall shoved around for a few seconds and found receiver Keanu Hill for a 33-yard completion.

Nacua was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct after removing his helmet to celebrate the touchdown. The penalty helped the Cougars miss the extra point because it was further behind.

BYU has 179 total yards compared to Utah’s 149. The Cougars converted six of their 11 tries on the third down.

Cougars catch a fourth and short stop

The Utes were in the red zone on the fourth down with just 2 yards to go for a first down. Utah opted for a shotgun formation racing game and was stopped dead by the Cougar defense.

Fans weren’t happy with the Utes’ call of play.

Utes Brant Kuithe’s tight end catches a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brewer with 7:22 left in the first half.

Utah’s practice lasted just six games and covered 80 yards.

Hall throws a 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Neil Pau’u to give the Cougars a 10-point lead with 10:37 left in the second quarter.

End of 1: BYU 3, Utah 0

The Cougars took advantage of Utah’s second-round grossing with a field-opening point of the game. Jacob Oldroyo logs on from a 37-yard field goal, his first attempt and score of the season. It was with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter.

The second quarter is approaching and BYU still has possession.

‘Utes begins with two consecutive turnovers

The BYU defense poses huge problems for the Utes.

In the first two practices for Utah, the Cougars forced turnovers. The first came on an interception by Chaz Ah You, and the second came on a fumble from Utah running back Tavion Thomas that BYU recovered. Thomas fumbled for the ball in two consecutive games.

BYU and Utah honor Ty Jordan pre-game memory

The memory of the late Utes player Ty Jordan will be honored by Utah throughout the season in a variety of ways. One of them is having a place for Jordan in the team’s brand new locker room.

And even though Saturday’s game takes place at LaVell Edwards Stadium, the Cougars have hosted Utah to sport a pre-game flag that reads LLTJ, which means “Long live Ty Jordan.”

But that was not all. Nacua, who was playing for Utah, introduced Utah backup quarterback Cam Rising. The flag then ended up in the hands of cornerback Aaron Lowe with the flag.

BYU Roar of Cougars is ready to roar

BYU’s official student section has arrived early in droves to prepare for the game against the Utah Utes, who have the opportunity to win their 10th straight game against the Cougars. Neither team has won 10 straight games against the other in the history of the rivalry.

The BYU ROC seems to be doing everything possible to help their Cougars overcome the surprise.
