Could helping the Jets offload Deshaun Watson be the key to a SuperBowl-worthy 49ers quarterback upgrade?

It’s Groundhog Day, so we figured we’d honor the holidays with another possible quarterback scenario for the 49ers this offseason. Since everything indicates that the 49ers won’t negotiate for Deshaun Watson, what if they help their quarterback situation by making it easier for someone else? Leo Luna made this bold suggestion on today’s Niner Nate-tion podcast.

“My dream scenario is to trade with the New York Jets. You have that relationship there with Robert Saleh, ”said Luna,“ You’re going to give them a better package to go get Deshaun Watson. You’re giving them the 12th pick this year, one next year, and maybe your third compensatory pick this year for pick # 2 [in 2021]. Now the Jets are taking an extra one to try and get Deshaun Watson, which is why they can do it. Watson’s marketing representation is in New York, so it’s a pick, and now the 49ers are able to take second place from Zach Wilson by doing that.

While it still seems crazy to me to trade for another quarterback when Deshaun is available, this is actually a devilishly good Leo scenario. The 49ers could potentially improve on their most important position without having to completely mortgage future ventures, the Jets have a bounty to offer the Texans, and Houston can tell their fans, “We got five first-round picks for the guy. ” That assumes the Jets have given Houston every first-round pick they would have over the next couple of years, but still, if you’re the Jets, why not? Like I said, this only impacts your drafts for two years thanks to the extra choices you get from swapping Jamal Adams. Who refuses this?
