With some of the buzz throughout the 2021 NFL offseason, you would have thought Tua Tagovailoa was at an exclusive NFL quarterback club like Ryan Leaf, Josh Rosen, JaMarcus Russell and others – the narrative was also toxic at one point. Calls for Miami to draft another QB with the No.3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft via Houston have been made. There were burning rumors about Deshaun Watson before the off-court allegations against Watson cast doubt on his playing career.
It’s been a long offseason for Dolphins fans in that regard, especially considering how the season ended with the Week 17 flop against the Bills; with Tagovailoa throwing three interceptions after throwing just two in his first seven career starts.
But summer brought a different tone. There is a different energy in South Florida after watching Tagovailoa operate at training camp. And, in addition, through two preseason competitions. Because Tagovailoa looks different. He plays differently. He acts differently.
And while all of that doesn’t guarantee that Tagovailoa will suddenly live up to the nearly impossible expectations of moving Dan Marino Dolphins fans to quarterback after two decades, it’s certainly a hell of a start. And now people beyond South Florida are starting to take notice. Count Rich Eisen among those who are impressed.
It wasn’t the rookie QBs who caught @richeisen eye this weekend – fans of the #Steels and #Dolphins have a lot to be excited about how @Your and @ _BigBen7 see there, looked inside #NFLPreseason Week 2:#NFL #Training camp pic.twitter.com/rpU4GJjkE1

“Kill Tagovailoa. Hmm. I saw a quarterback who was decisive. I saw a quarterback who knew where he wanted to go with the ball. And he threw it all over the place. 16 of 23, 183 yards and one score. It’s a lot. I wonder if we’re going to see him more in week 3 of the preseason or if we’re going to sit back and watch him show up in New England. Here we go, ”Eisen said.
“I can’t wait to watch this match in week 1. If he took that big leap forward, if he did that jump, if he is comfortable, if he now knows a lot better about it. ‘offense, he now has the cadence in the caucus, he now has a full understanding of what his team wants him to do and he has confidence in him for the season? Oh baby. “
Oh baby indeed, Rich. We don’t know if Tagovailoa will play in Week 3 of the preseason. But if he doesn’t, he’s shown time and time again he’s not the same quarterback many are keen to see Miami give up after 9 starts and 10 games.
