Couple have been arrested for reckless second degree endangerment after knowingly boarding a flight to Hawaii after receiving positive coronavirus test results at San Francisco International Airport, Kauai police said .

Wesley Moribe, 41, and Courtney Peterson, 46, of Wailua, Hawaii, boarded a United Airlines flight to SFO in Lihue, Hawaii on Sunday, “putting the passengers on the flight at risk of death,” said responsible. The couple were traveling with a 4 year old child.

San Francisco airport officials had asked the two to self-isolate and not board the plane after each receiving positive test results, but Moribe and Peterson defied orders and asked when even flew, officials said.

Officials at Lihue Airport in Hawaii alerted Kauai police to the couple, and both were arrested after they landed. The pair posted bail set at $ 1,000 each. The child was given to a family member and child protection services were notified of the incident, police said.

The couple could not be reached for comment.

Kauai County health officials said all active cases were in isolation. People who have come into contact with the couple are identified, offered coronavirus tests and asked to quarantine.

Hawaii, which has some of the country’s toughest travel restrictions, recently approved a Kauai County emergency rule that would require all inbound travelers and visitors – including mainland and inter-island residents – to go. quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.

“The Kauai Police Department, working alongside our county and state partners, remains diligent in protecting the health and safety of our island,” said Police Chief Todd G. Raybuck. “We continue to urge visitors and residents to follow the governor’s emergency rules and take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
