MADISON, Wisconsin – Documents filed after Chandler Halderson, 23, was arrested for providing false information to authorities, explain why they believe Krista and Bart Halderson’s son lied to them about his parents’ fate.
Halderson was arrested on July 8, a day after reporting his parents missing to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.
In a probable cause statement filed on July 9, the sheriff’s office said Halderson told them his parents were picked up by an unknown acquaintance early in the morning of July 1. In a conversation with News 3 Now, Halderson said his parents were picked up by a couple he didn’t know but knew they were leaving for their cabin in Langlade County and left early that morning for avoid holiday weekend traffic.
Halderson told News 3 Now and investigators he received a text from his mother on July 4 saying they had arrived in White Lake, Wisconsin. Halderson reportedly told the sheriff’s office his mother said they were planning to go to a parade that day, but their investigation revealed there was no parade in White Lake that day and that Krista and Bart Halderson were never in their cabin in White Lake.
The sheriff’s office said local law enforcement had checked the cabin and questioned the neighbors in the cabin and found no sign that anyone had recently visited the Haldersons cabin or on that property .
According to the probable cause statement, further investigation revealed that Chandler Halderson was seen at the home of a known acquaintance in the town of Cottage Grove, rural Dane County, driving his vehicle in reverse with the tailgate. open in a field near the woods.
Authorities searched the area and found remains later identified as a human torso a short distance from where Chandler Halderson’s vehicle was seen. The remains were sent for identification, and on Monday, the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the torso as belonging to Bart Halderson. The medical examiner ruled that he had died as a result of a homicide and that he had been shot.
Krista Halderson is still missing and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office has requested the public’s help in gathering information on her fate while saying they are investigating Bart Halderson’s death as a homicide.
Chandler Halderson has yet to be formally charged with any felony, but is being held in Dane County Jail on $ 10,000 cash bond after prosecutors pleaded for $ 1 million bail. A Dane County court commissioner ruled for the smaller amount because Halderson had not yet been charged, although prosecutors say it could happen as early as Thursday.
If Halderson posts a bond, he will be required to carry a GPS tracking device and will not be allowed to leave Dane County.
