The FHA said it expects 60% of the state’s hospitals to face a “critical understaffing” over the next seven days.
Of those hospitalized with Covid-19, 21% are in intensive care and 13% are on ventilators, according to the FHA.
“Current hospitalizations and the rate of growth continue to be of great concern,” said Mary C. Mayhew, president and CEO of the Florida Hospital Association, in the statement. “But vaccines work! The fact that less than 3% of current hospitalizations are from nursing homes and long-term care facilities shows that the state’s focus on immunization and protection of the elderly and Florida’s most vulnerable worked. “
The data released by the FHA on Tuesday is from a hospital survey completed on August 2 and represents 82% of acute care hospitals in Florida. State-wide data comes from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services.
The cases are mostly found in areas where vaccination rates remain low, Zients said in a briefing on Monday.
