Syracuse, New York – Three more people have died from Covid-19 in the past day as the number of confirmed cases in Onondaga County surpassed 28,000, according to the county executive.

That means about 1 in 16 people in the county have tested positive for the coronavirus since March.

Two women, 84 and 71, have died since Saturday, according to county manager Ryan McMahon. A third person died in a retirement home; the county does not have demographic information on these losses.

A total of 579 people have died here since the virus was first detected in March. As of Saturday, the county had just over 3,400 active cases.

At the same time, the decrease in the number of new cases offers some hope, according to McMahon.

In the past day, the county confirmed 299 more cases. It’s been seven days in a row with daily reports of fewer than 300 new cases, the data shows.

“Our best week in new cases since November,” McMahon wrote on social media. “We are turning the corner and have to stick to the basics.”

Overall, the county has confirmed 28,253 cases.

Hospitalizations remain high but stable.

To date, 170 patients have been in hospitals in the Syracuse area, according to McMahon. It’s just one more patient than Saturday’s report.

Thirty-seven patients remain in intensive care.

McMahon urged people to continue to follow safety guidelines, including staying home when sick and avoiding parties and crowds.

“Don’t be complacent about rallies, we can still do a lot better,” he said.
