ROCHESTER, Minnesota (KTTC) – As COVID-19 cases increase in the Midwest, the nation’s number one ranked hospital has worked hard to stay on top of the situation.
Amidst all the updates, there’s some great news from Mayo.
The good news shared in Tuesday’s situation update is that the positivity rate has dropped, putting Rochester below 10%.
We have also learned that Mayo staff are contracting the virus from the community spread, but the number of staff currently infected with COVID-19 in the Midwest has declined slightly from last week.
“Over the weekend, we saw a drop in the number of tests being done, which could be a sign that we have fewer people exposed in the community,” said Amy Williams, CEO of the Mayo Clinic.
Almost a week ago, we learned that more than 900 staff at Mayo Clinic Health System had been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the previous two weeks.
Williams said on Tuesday the clinic had been able to stay on top of things.
“It’s key to how we’ve been able to manage across the Midwest using our entire system,” Williams said. “We have also hired or hired additional staff who have retired. Now it is the new retirees who are still licensed.
However, this is not a long term solution.
“We have staff to cover the gaps created by COVID, but the more gaps we see, the harder it will be to fill them,” Williams said.
Another positive development is that a new antibody treatment is going well.
“We have infused over 105 people with monoclonal antibodies. It’s going incredibly well,” Williams said.
While some things are going in the right direction, Mayo is also bracing for a new wave of cases requiring hospitalization.
“We’re all planning and ready for a surge that we anticipate two weeks after Thanksgiving, after all the gatherings and all the travel. So please wear your mask, social distancing, and hand hygiene, ”Williams said. “This is the key. Reducing the outbreak and reducing the burden on our hospitals is essential. “
On Tuesday, Williams provided an update on the situation of inpatients in the Mayo Clinic Health System.
• Rochester, Minnesota, 87 patients, including 27 in ICU.
• Northwestern Wisconsin – 84 patients, including 11 in the ICU.
• Southeast Minnesota – 24 patients, including 2 in ICU.
• Southwest Minnesota – 42 patients, including 10 in the ICU.
• Southwestern Wisconsin – 33 patients, including 3 in ICU.
