Humboldt County Joint Information Center press release:

131 more cases of COVID-19 were reported over the three-day weekend. A previously reported case has been determined to be a duplicate, so the total number of county residents who tested positive is now 2,393.

The state recommended on Sunday that counties suspend administration of a single batch of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. This batch represents about 90% of Humboldt County’s doses for the new first doses that were to be scheduled this week. Health officer Dr Ian Hoffman described it as a “huge setback” and said if no appointments were rescheduled or canceled from this week, the next groups for vaccination could be hardest hit.

“Plans to expand immunization clinics to people over 75 have been delayed by this hiatus, and it’s unclear how long this will continue,” Dr. Hoffman said. “People in this age group were just starting to get vaccinated by local providers, so we are working hard to get more doses wherever they are available to minimize disruption as much as possible.” He went on to say, “It’s entirely possible that the batch will be distributed and we can resume the vaccination plans for the elderly, but at the moment we just don’t know when that will be.

On a related note, the California Department of Public Health today announced that Humboldt County remains in the “purple” or widespread level as part of the “Action Plan for a Safer Economy” state, with an adjusted case rate of 17.7 and a positivity rate of 4.9%.

Dr Hoffman added that county residents should continue to follow COVID-19 safety measures, including wearing a face covering, maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from anyone outside. around the house, avoiding gatherings and washing your hands frequently.
